October 2011 - 2nd National Convening

Excelencia in Education reconvened partners and stakeholders in Washington, DC to take stock of the initiative’s impact on Latino College Completion.

Charting the Road for Ensuring America’s Future

From May through August 2010, Sarita Brown, president, and Deborah Santiago, vice president of policy and research, spoke with the leadership groups who attended the first convening or expressed interest in joining Excelencia’s Latino college completion initiative. This led to the development of a sign on process so that organizations across the country could coalesce to develop and implement a tactical plan.

On September 8, 2010 Excelencia and its partners held a press conference to announce their commitment to chart a policy roadmap to increase Latino college completion. As the process and analysis continued more organizations joined the initiative So that by March 2011, 60 organizations has joined with Excelencia to promote the Roadmap for Ensuring America’s Future by Increasing Latino College Completion.

April 2010 - 1st National Convening

In April 2010, Excelencia in Education held the first invitational convening Latino College Completion in Washington, DC. Approximately 80 professionals participated, representing the following sectors: public policy, higher education, philanthropy, federal government, Latino advocacy (with a higher education focus), business/workforce, and media. The group engaged in deliberations about immediate and longer-term ways to meet the nation’s college completion goals by increasing Latino College Completion.

Target and USA Funds joined initiative sponsors, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Lumina Foundation, and the Kresge Foundation.
