Divided We Fail: Improving Completion and Closing Racial Gaps in California Community Colleges, tracks more than a quarter of a million students who entered a California Community College in 2003‐04 over six years and analyzes their progress and outcomes by major racial/ethnic populations. The report highlights the urgent need to improve student outcomes in community colleges, particularly for blacks and Latinos.

This report offers policy recommendations, based on recent research and discussions, to improve the educational attainment of Florida's workforce, with a focus on Latinos. Given that a large portion of the demographic growth in Florida through 2030 will be Hispanic, the state's economic competitiveness will be highly dependent on the educational attainment of this population. However, the educational attainment of Hispanics in Florida is low. In 2008, about 23 percent of Hispanics 25 and over in Florida had earned a bachelor's degree or higher. Florida Policy Options to Accelerate Latino Student Success in Higher Education specifies policy recommendations for higher education that can foster conversations with state legislators, public officials, education stakeholders, and college/university leaders to improve the educational attainment of all Floridians. To be competitive, California's economy, like the rest of the U.S., requires a greater number of well-educated workers than currently exists. Many activities are underway to improve educational preparation and opportunity for Californians. However, without concerted statewide focus to leverage existing efforts and introduce new strategic initiatives, accelerating California higher educational attainment and workforce preparation will remain difficult.. Latinos are the second largest ethnic group, the fastest growing population, and the most undereducated group both in Arizona and in the U.S. At a time when "baby boomers" are planning to retire, growing numbers of young Latinos are preparing to enter the job market. |
