Published By Salud America! Published On March 7, 2018 Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training has been named a “Program to Watch” in a new report by Excelencia in Education. Éxito!, led by Salud America!director Dr. Amelie G. Ramirez of UT Health San Antonio, recruits 25 Latino students and health professionals annually for a culturally tailored curriculum to promote pursuit of a doctoral degree and cancer research career. Excelencia, which promotes Latinos in higher education, created its “Programs to Watch” report to highlight innovative or up-and-coming programs. The report features Éxito! and 18 other programs from multiple states. The report lauded Éxito! for its cultural competency, service to Latino students, concrete metrics, and elements of a strong story. “Excelencia hopes that by bringing attention to these programs, we can encourage institutions, practitioners, funders, policy makers, and other stakeholders to take note, and keep an eye out as these programs continue to improve Latino student success,” according to the report. Éxito! has trained more than 150 students and professionals since 2011. This year, Éxito! trainees will attend a five-day summer institute June 4-8, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas. The summer institute features Latino researchers, mentors, and doctoral candidacy experts to inform about the latest in Latino cancer, enhance career development, and provide motivation to take the next step in education and apply for doctoral programs. The program also offers paid internships for pilot research. “We’re excited by the recognition of our program by Excelencia,” Ramirez said. “We aim to help Latinos take the next steps from a master’s degree to get their doctoral degree and really focus on careers in Latino cancer research and prevention.” Publication URL Read More
