Institution South Texas College State Texas Academic Level Associate Issue Area Academic Program Website https://www.southtexascollege.edu/dual/academies/index.html Key Personnel Leonardo Castaneda Program Focus Dual Degree/Dual Credit/Early College High School, STEM Overview The Dual Enrollment Academy (DEA) Programs were introduced in 2005 to provide Hispanic students a unique opportunity, in which high-achieving high school juniors earn an associate degree from South Texas College tuition-free while completing their high school graduation requirements. Program Description Through partnerships with school districts, parents, and the community the Academies successfully serve more than 250 students annually through 5 academies across 3 campuses. The Academies focus on Medical Science, Engineering, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, and Teaching. The academies allow participants to gain exposure to a college atmosphere at an early age, while having the opportunity to receive hands-on experiences. Additionally, every Friday the program hosts professionals from local universities to speak to the students about various bachelor degrees, financial aid, campus housing, admissions, and more. Outcome From 2005 to 2023, over 1,500 students have graduated with an associate’s degree through the program. 100% of students completing the Academy Programs have successfully transitioned to 4-year institutions. In Spring 2023, Academy Program Graduates were offered over $4.7 Million in Scholarships. Since 2005, students have been offered over $37.3 Million in Scholarships.
