Return to HSIs Over the Years Main Page What have we learned about HSIs from Excelencia? Excelencia in Education’s first publication in 2004 was “Latino Student Success at Hispanic-Serving Institutions.” And we have continued examining HSIs and their role in Latino student success in higher education ever since to frame issues, contexts, understanding and opportunities. For example, we created the emerging HSI indicator in 2009 based on our analysis of concentrated enrollment and institutional effort for intentionally serving Latinos. This compilation of publications represents work Excelencia has released over the last 20 years and includes issue briefs, HSI lists, and a compilation of years of data on HSIs. ISSUE BRIEFS ON HSIs Essay: Creating a List of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Publication Date: March 2024 The purpose of this essay is to provide a common definition and methodology for identifying HSIs that will result in better analysis and more accuracy. Using a common definition based on an established methodology will more accurately represent this group of institutions. Results from the study are based on 12 HSIs from our Excelencia in Action network. LEARN MORE From Capacity to Success: HSIs, Title V, and Latino Students Publication Date: May 2016 This brief examines the impact of 20 years of investment in HSIs and the link of this support on Latino student success and found many of these institutions were investing in efforts linked to improving student success, such as faculty/curriculum development and student support services. It also offers recommendations for further research to refine the findings from this examination.
